Every creature that even appears in the Bible retains a heightened significance. The raven or crow is mentioned ten times in the Old Testament and once in the New. There are far more biblical references to the sheep, the central animal of the Hebrew economy, and the dove, an archaic symbol of divine love. But no other creature appears in such varied contexts, or with such symbolic ambiguity, as the crow or raven. In the human imagination, crows have always been creatures of extremes. They are playful and solemn, noisy and articulate, sacred and profane.

He tried to rejoin the other jackdaws, but they would no longer accept him. Many versions of the fable append a moral that one ought not to aspire above one’s station in life. The crow was sacred to Apollo, god of the sun and of music, who once took the form of a crow or hawk when the gods fled to Egypt in order to hide from the monster Typhon.
